Is the problem in one spot, or along the whole run?
A repair is usually the right call when the run is sound and the fault is in one or two spots. If a gutter leaks at one corner but is straight, tight to the house and has no rust anywhere else, fixing the corner usually fixes the gutter.
If several seams are going at once, that usually means the run is near the end of its life, and replacement is the better spend.
Faults that are usually a repair
These problems can be fixed without replacing the gutter, as long as the rest of the run is sound:
- A single leaking seam or corner. A seam that has opened on its own can be resealed.
- A sag in the middle of a run. A sag can mean hangers have pulled loose or are spaced too far apart. We reset the pitch and add hangers where the run needs them.
- A section pulling off the fascia in one place. Reattaching one section is a repair. Gutters pulling away in several places point to replacement.
- A downspout that has come apart. Downspouts knocked loose or disconnected are reconnected and fastened back to the wall.
- A blocked outlet or elbow. Water backing up where the gutter drains into the downspout can come from a blockage, which is cleared rather than replaced.
- One damaged length. A single bent or split length can be replaced on its own.
Storm damage follows the same rule. We reattach sections knocked loose, replace damaged lengths and reconnect downspouts, and if you are claiming on insurance we can provide a written quote for the claim. Where leaves and debris caused the blockage, gutter cleaning clears the whole run and flushes the downspouts.
Signs it may be time for new gutters
Some gutters can be repaired. Others have reached the end. If you see several of these, replacement is usually the better spend:
- Gutters pulling away from the fascia
- Seams splitting or leaking in more than one spot
- Sagging between hangers
- Rust, cracks or holes along the run
- Water spilling over during normal rain
- No gutters on part of the roof
Overflow on its own can come from a blocked outlet or too few downspouts, and both of those are repairs. A part of the roof with no gutter at all needs a new run, whatever condition the rest of the system is in.
What a replacement involves
A replacement is a new seamless gutter installation rather than new parts on the old system. It covers:
- Measuring the roofline on site
- Forming seamless runs at the property from one length of coil
- Secure hangers and the correct pitch toward each outlet
- Downspouts, elbows and outlets placed where the water needs to go
- Taking the old gutters down and hauling them away, which is included in the quote
- 6-inch gutters, which we price as standard on most homes
- A color to match your trim
Most homes are done in a day. Larger roofs and second stories can take longer.
Why seamless gutters change the decision
A seamless gutter is formed on site from one continuous piece of coil, cut to the length of each roof run, so there are no joints down the length of the gutter.
Sectional gutter comes in shorter pieces joined together along the run. One installation sheet for sectional metal gutters lists the gutter in 10-foot lengths that are joined and sealed, and each of those joints is a place a leak can start.
On a seamless run, a leaking corner or outlet is in one of a few known places and is a repair. On a sectional run, one leaking joint is still a repair, but several leaking at once is the pattern where replacement is usually the better spend.
How old the gutters are
A 2007 study of how long home components last, from the National Association of Home Builders and Bank of America Home Equity, put aluminum gutters at about 20 years and aluminum downspouts at about 30. InterNACHI, an association of home inspectors, gives aluminum gutters a range of 20 to more than 40 years and says its figures are guidelines only.
So age alone does not decide repair or replacement. A run that is straight, tight and dry at every seam does not need replacing because of its age, and a younger run with several failing seams may.
What Panama City rain adds to the decision
NOAA climate normals for 1991 to 2020 put average yearly rainfall at about 59.5 inches at Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport near Panama City, with July and August the wettest months. At the Panama City 5N weather station, the same normals count about 100 days a year with measurable rain, about 39 with half an inch or more, and about 20 with an inch or more.
That rain gives a fault plenty of chances to show itself, so what the gutters do in ordinary rain is a fair guide to whether the problem is in one spot or along the run. On the heavier days, a gutter that spills over the front edge while it is clean and its downspouts are clear may be too small for the roof it drains.
A gutter that is too small for its roof is a replacement.

Repair or replace at a glance
| What you see | Usually | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One leaking seam or corner | Repair | An opened seam can be resealed |
| Several seams leaking on the same run | Replace | The run is likely near the end of its life |
| A sag in one section | Repair | Loose or widely spaced hangers can be reset and added |
| Sagging along most of the length | Replace | The problem is the whole run, not one hanger |
| A downspout come apart | Repair | It can be reconnected and refastened |
| Rust, cracks or holes along the run | Replace | The metal itself has failed |
| Overflow in normal rain on a clean gutter | Depends | Too few downspouts is a repair; a gutter too small for its roof is a replacement |
